50+ Legal Free Overnight Spots: State-by-State Guide
It is 9 p.m., you have just crossed a state line, and the next developed campground is 90 minutes away. You need one safe, legal, free place to sleep in the vehicle tonight. This guide is that list: the five categories of legal free overnight parking in the U.S., and the specific spots that actually work on a road trip, pulled from our verified overnight dataset.
Before you pull into a lot: "free" is not "anything goes." Every category below has a posted limit, an unwritten courtesy, or both. Read the small print on each entry.
The five categories of free overnight
- Rest areas — state DOT-run, on the interstate. Legal by statute, but the allowed time varies wildly (2 hours in Tennessee, 24 hours in Texas).
- Walmart Supercenter — historic RV-friendly courtesy. Up to each store manager; many urban stores have banned it.
- Cracker Barrel — reliably RV-friendly pull-through bays, especially in the South; expected to eat at the restaurant.
- Casinos — back-lot RV parking in gambling states (Nevada, Mississippi, Missouri, Deadwood, West Wendover); 1–3 nights.
- BLM / National Forest dispersed land — the real prize. Free for 14 days, but self-contained only.
The West: where free camping actually lives
California
The Eastern Sierra's Alabama Hills (near Lone Pine) is the crown jewel, but since September 2024 it requires a free permit via recreation.gov, and the stay limit is 7 days in 28. For winter long-stays, the Midland LTVA near Blythe and Pilot Knob LTVA let self-contained rigs stay seven months on a $180 season permit. On the road, the US-395 rest area near Bishop allows only 8 hours — do not plan to sleep there — while the Chester Walmart (Hwy 36, near Lassen) is a reliable one-night courtesy stop if you ask the manager.
Nevada
Nevada DOT lets you stay up to 24 hours at rest areas like the US-93 stop near Boulder City. Rural Walmarts in Elko (I-80) and Mesquite/Moapa (I-15) are RV-friendly; the Las Vegas urban stores are not. For real dispersed camping, Ireteba Peaks Wilderness near Searchlight offers 14 days of free solitude.
Arizona
Arizona is the winter free-camping capital. The La Posa LTVA near Quartzsite is the most famous snowbird hub in the country; Yuma's cluster (Imperial Dam, Hot Spring, Tamarisk, Mule Mountain) offers the same $180 / $40 fee structure. ADOT allows overnight at rest areas with no posted statewide cap — the I-10 stop near Casa Grande is a classic pull-through. For one-night lot stays, the Flagstaff Walmart (Route 66) and Casino del Sol in Tucson work, but only after asking the manager or security booth.
Utah
Kanab's Walmart on Highway 89 is the well-known gateway stop for Zion and Bryce. The real prize is the BLM land outside Moab (Sand Flats, Klondike Bluffs): 14 days in 30 days, but the annual SORVA pass is required for the OHV zone. West Wendover casinos at the state line allow 1–3 free nights with a dump station.
Colorado
San Juan National Forest near Durango and Roosevelt National Forest near Fort Collins both offer 14-day dispersed camping. But caution: CDOT prohibits overnight at many mountain rest areas on I-70 (the Vail-area stop is limited to 4 hours). The Grand Junction Walmart on I-70 is your reliable city stop.
Mountain West & Pacific Northwest
Montana: Flathead National Forest near West Glacier is superb dispersed country; most I-90 rest areas (e.g. near Butte) allow overnight with no posted statewide limit. The Missoula Walmart is RV-friendly. Wyoming: Bridger-Teton National Forest outside Grand Teton NP is the classic free Teton view — but WYDOT rest areas on I-80 (near Laramie) are capped at 8 hours. The Jackson Hoback Walmart is famous but bear country — store food. Idaho: Sawtooth National Forest near Stanley is the scenic dispersed pick; BLM here allows 16 days, not 14. Oregon: Siuslaw National Forest on the coast has dispersed spots 100+ feet from the beach; ODOT caps I-5 rest areas at 12 hours. Washington: Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in dry eastern WA is the dispersed workhorse; WSDOT I-5 rest areas near Centralia are only 8 hours — use the Spokane Valley Walmart instead.
Midwest, South & East
Texas is one of the friendliest pass-through states: the I-10 rest area near Van Horn allows a statutory 24 hours, and rural Walmarts like Amarillo on I-40 are permissive. New Mexico follows suit (I-25 near Socorro, 24 hours; BLM near Abiquiu/Ghost Ranch for 14 days of high-desert solitude). Florida is the opposite: FDOT rest areas are capped at 3 hours — never sleep there. Use the Tallahassee Walmart or Cracker Barrel instead. Tennessee (2-hour rest-area cap) and Minnesota (4 hours) are equally hostile to rest-area sleepers; pivot to Walmarts or Cracker Barrels. Missouri (I-70 near Columbia, 24 hours) and riverfront casinos near St. Louis are excellent. Pennsylvania Turnpike service plazas allow overnight RV parking with fuel, food, and restrooms — a quietly great option. Alaska: Chugach National Forest near Seward allows 15 days of dispersed camping; Seward Highway pull-outs are permissive in summer, but winter temperatures drop below -40F with no services.
Apps and maps that keep you legal
Three tools do the heavy lifting: iOverlander and FreeRoam crowdsource specific spots with user reports; onX Offroad shows BLM/NF/private land ownership boundaries so you never accidentally pull onto private ground. Always cross-check a listed Walmart with a phone call to the manager — store policies change, and a "no overnight" sign can appear overnight itself. Our Vanlife Overnight Finder and State Overnight Rules tool compile the same data offline.
