Leave No Trace for Van Campers: Dispersed Camping Etiquette

Clean dispersed campsite left as found

There is a quiet anxiety every boondocker knows: will this amazing free spot still be here when I come back next year? The answer depends less on rangers and more on the behavior of the people already here. Dispersed camping survives only as long as the next arrival sees no trace of the last. For van dwellers, that means adapting the classic Leave No Trace (LNT) principles to a vehicle, a grey-water tank, and a week-long stay — not just a one-night backpacker stop.

This guide is for anyone living or traveling in a van, RV, or truck camper on public land. It covers what the seven LNT principles actually mean in daily vanlife, the hygiene rules that keep you legal and welcome, and a pre-departure checklist.

The seven principles, translated into vanlife

1. Plan ahead and prepare

Before you arrive, know the stay limit (14 days on most BLM/NF land), the fire restrictions, and whether a permit is required (Alabama Hills, Moab SORVA). A prepared camper does not run out of water on day 10 and have to drive out twice.

2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces

Drive only on existing dirt roads; never create a new track into a meadow or across cryptobiotic desert soil. Park on rock, gravel, or existing compacted earth. Avoid anchoring on living vegetation.

3. Dispose of waste properly

Pack out everything. Human waste must go into a cathole 6–8 inches deep, at least 200 feet from water, with toilet paper packed out in a bag. A vanlife rule of thumb: if you cannot carry it in, do not create it here.

4. Leave what you find

Do not collect rocks, antlers, plants, or firewood. Dead standing wood is wildlife habitat, and removing it is illegal on most public land. Bring your own firewood or buy it locally.

5. Minimize campfire impact

In a van, the simplest LNT move is to skip the fire entirely and use a propane stove. If you do build one, use an existing ring, keep it small, and burn it down to cold ash. During fire restrictions, fires are not a choice.

6. Respect wildlife

Store food in closed containers, never in the van's open cab overnight. In bear country (Rockies, Cascades, Alaska, parts of the Appalachians), use hard-sided bear boxes or bear canisters. Keep 100 yards from bears and wolves, 25 yards from other wildlife.

7. Be considerate of other visitors

This is where vanlife etiquette most often breaks down — see below.

Camp hygiene: the three things that get people banned

Grey water. Never dump dish or shower water on the ground, even "biodegradable" soap. It attracts animals, stains the soil, and is technically illegal in most dispersed areas. Catch it in a basin and dump it at a designated dump station or in a restroom sink. A 5-gallon grey-water jug costs $20 and pays for itself in goodwill.

Human waste. In a van without a cassette toilet, the cathole rule applies. Dig it deep, cover it well, pack out the paper. "Cat holes" dug next to roadways are the number one eyesight that closes dispersed areas.

Trash. Pack out every wrapper, bottle, and piece of food packaging. Also pack out what you find: ten minutes of picking up previous campers' trash per stay is the culture that keeps free land open.

Noise, privacy, and neighbor etiquette

On public land, you do not own the view — you are borrowing it. The unwritten rules:

  • Give space. If another rig is visible, park at least 100 yards away or around a rise. In popular dispersed areas, "I arrived first" does not entitle you to claim the whole valley.
  • Engines off by 8 p.m. Generators should run only during broad daytime windows (roughly 8 a.m.–8 p.m.) and never be the soundtrack of someone else's wilderness.
  • Music and calls out loud. Headphones. Speakers are for your site, not the drainage.
  • Keep pets close. A dog running loose that harasses wildlife or charges another camper is the fastest way to make enemies.
  • Greet, don't stare. A nod as you pass a neighboring rig is the whole social contract.

The departure checklist

Five minutes before you drive off, walk the site on foot:

  • Fire ring cold to the touch; any unburned trash picked out.
  • Grey-water basin and bucket emptied legally at a dump station, not on the ground.
  • Tire tracks smoothed if you drove off the main track onto soft earth.
  • Three-step litter sweep: ground, then around the van's perimeter, then underneath.
  • No toilet paper, tape, zip-ties, or bottle caps left behind.
  • Signage: remove anything you pinned to a tree or rock.

If a stranger drove in behind you, they should not be able to tell you were there. That is the whole standard.

Key takeaways

  • Pack out everything — including toilet paper and all grey water.
  • Never dump grey water on the ground; use a basin and a dump station.
  • Park 100 yards from other rigs; generators off by 8 p.m.; headphones after dark.
  • Drive only on existing roads; never create new tracks or strip cryptobiotic soil.
  • Leave the site cleaner than you found it — that is what keeps free camping legal.

Frequently asked questions

Is biodegradable soap OK to use outside?
No, not on the ground. Even "biodegradable" soap requires 200+ feet of soil filtration and time. Wash in a basin, then dump the grey water at a restroom or dump station. The same applies to dishwashing.
Can I have a campfire in a dispersed van site?
Only when no fire restriction is in effect and there is an existing fire ring. Use a pan you can pack out, keep it small, and burn it fully to ash. In summer in California and the Mountain West, assume fires are banned until you check the current order.
How close can I park to another camper?
Aim for at least 100 yards or a rise between rigs. In truly crowded pockets (a popular BLM wash on a holiday), use judgment — but never pull into someone's view or noise radius.
